Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that industrial harmony in campuses is in jeopardy following the inability of the Federal Government to honour the 2025 agreement with the union.
The union said it would not be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order in Nigerian universities
At a press briefing in Jos yesterday, Chairman of the University of Jos chapter of ASUU, Dr. Julbe Joseph Molwus, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s commitment to implementing the agreement, especially the failure to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC), which is crucial for facilitating and guiding its actualization.
He said government has failed to match the fanfare that heralded signing of the agreement with concrete action.
The union also expressed anger at what it described as selective implementation of the salary component of the agreement, which include Consolidated Academic Tool Agreement (CATA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), the Professional Allowance (PA) and the responsibility allowance.
“The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) met at the Modibbo Adama University, Yola on May 9-10 and renewed the state of the union. The union also reviewed the level of implementation of of the FGN/ASUU agreement, which was signed on December 23, 2025.

“After extensive deliberations, NEC was dissatisfied with the level of commitment demonstrated by the Federal Government towards the implementation of the agreement,” Molwus said.
The union also frowned at what it described as selective payments by some tertiary institutions, which had led to distortions across federal and state universities.
The union lampooned some state governments, which claimed that the agreement was solely between the federal government and ASUU, despite their participation in the tripartite agreement process.
Molwus, however, commended two state universities, Sa’adu Zungur University, Gadau and the Ekiti State University for setting the pace in the implementation of the agreement.
The union also expressed displeasure with the distortion in implementation of the proposed National Research Council and the unilateral decision by the minister of education to establish the National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF) without adhering to the FGN-ASUU agreement.
ASUU also strongly condemned the reversal of the mother tongue policy in favor of English for early childhood education, calling it retrogressive and a loss of past gains. They advocate for the use of local languages as a best practice.l, as it is done in most countries.
On staff welfare the union said it’s displeased with the treatment meted out to retired members of the Union, especially the non remittance of money in the contributory pension scheme.
