The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has said the patriotism, selfless service and courage of Nigeria’s fallen heroes remain a lasting source of inspiration to officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
The Army Chief made the remark yesterday, during the Interdenominational Church Service held at the All Saints Protestant Church, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026.
Represented by the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, Lieutenant General Shaibu described the church service as one of the key events commemorating the Nigerian Army’s 163rd anniversary, noting that it was dedicated to honouring the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of fallen heroes to the defence of the nation.
He commended officers and soldiers for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity despite prevailing security challenges.
The COAS urged troops to remain steadfast in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities, charging them to continue serving the nation with courage, discipline and professionalism across the various theatres of operation nationwide.

Earlier in his sermon, the Director of Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic), Brigadier General Francis Maimagani, encouraged military personnel to remain faithful in serving God and humanity through their calling as members of the Armed Forces.
He also urged officers and soldiers to remain courageous, steadfast and committed to the effective discharge of their statutory responsibilities in defence of the country.
The interdenominational service was attended by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who was represented by retired Major General Henry Wesley; representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs; Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Service Headquarters; senior serving and retired military officers; officers and soldiers; members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA); the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA); and other invited guests.
The church service formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, which commemorates 163 years of the Nigerian Army’s service and contributions to national security.
