Former senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to establish a “monarchical system” in Nigeria rather than holding a democratic election ahead of the 2027 polls.

Speaking on the Channels TV Morning Brief, Melaye said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has become desperate because the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is emerging as the strongest opposition, attracting members from other parties.

“President Bola Tinubu wants to be coronated; he doesn’t want an election. He wants us to practise a monarchical system of government. This is not just about ADC; it is about democracy. They are trying to seize power by force. They can’t have a one-party state; they just want to be coronated,” he said.

When asked about what step the ADC wants to take, Melaye mentioned that the party is pursuing multiple legal avenues in response to INEC’s decision.

“We are going to fight this with every legal means; we are going to be on the streets; we are going to do everything possible to make sure that democracy remains.

We are challenging the delisting of David Mark as ADC chair. We have filed suits in court to restore the leadership.

“We are even going to criminalise the activities of the officials of InEC because what they have done is criminal and we are going to face it from the criminal perspective.”

Dino Melaye described INEC’s removal of Mark as the ADC chairman as a “Jankara Interpretation” and reiterated that the fight is for democracy and the rule of law, not personal interest.
