Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has made history after receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first African musician to earn the prestigious recognition.

Kidjo was honoured in the Recording category for her remarkable contribution to global music, her Grammy-winning career and her decades-long efforts to promote African culture and stories internationally.

The recognition adds to a career spanning more than four decades, during which Kidjo has released 18 albums and won five Grammy Awards, establishing her as one of Africa’s most influential musical voices.

Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, praised Kidjo’s artistry and international impact while announcing the honour.

“Angélique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents.

“We are proud to honour her as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world,” she said.

Kidjo started her music career at a young age and later gained international recognition for a distinctive sound that combines traditional African influences with jazz, funk, R&B and global pop.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with leading artistes, including Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi, alongside international music figures such as Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel and John Legend.

Beyond her musical achievements, Kidjo has played a significant role in creating greater visibility for African artistes and inspiring younger generations to take their music to international audiences.

She has also used her platform for philanthropic causes, particularly initiatives promoting girls’ education and women’s empowerment across Africa.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame honour further strengthens Kidjo’s standing as a global African cultural ambassador whose influence extends beyond music to culture, social development and international representation.
