The Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, where a cholera outbreak has been reported in Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Samuel Nteogwuijah, has advised residents not to panic, assuring them that adequate measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the disease from Emeroke community to other parts of the area.
A statement by the media unit of the council, made available to journalists in Uyo on Sunday, stated that there are coordinated efforts to combat the deadly disease.
The statement reads in part:
“The Executive Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Samuel Nteogwuijah, has assured the people of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, particularly Emeroke communities, of a coordinated effort to combat the deadly disease that has infested the area.”
The council chairman was reported to have visited victims at Immanuel General Hospital, Eket, to facilitate immediate treatment of those affected.
The statement further reads:
“The Council Chairman recently visited Immanuel General Hospital, Eket, to facilitate the immediate commencement of treatment for identified cases and assured them of the Local Government’s support. He stated that plans are underway to partner with the state government and relevant agencies to prevent further infestation of the area with the terminal disease.”
The council chairman expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his swift and effective intervention by directing the Ministry of Health and relevant agencies to provide urgent assistance to the affected communities and to help contain the situation.
Nteogwuijah urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, eat only thoroughly cooked food, drink boiled water, and report any suspected cases.
“The governor has mobilised funds, materials, and human resources to the hospital while pledging a lasting solution to the challenge.
“Health workers have been dispatched to affected communities to gather firsthand information, assess present conditions, and enlighten the people on safety measures,” he said.
