Akpabio declares Ondo South senatorial seat vacant

Senate

From Adesuwa Tsan, Abuja

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has formally declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant, following the assumption of office by Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The announcement was made during plenary, coming exactly one week after Ibrahim’s accreditation in New York, where he presented his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

Akpabio said the vacancy takes immediate effect in line with constitutional provisions and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the seat within 30 days.

Under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Senate is mandated to notify INEC of any vacancy in its membership to trigger a fresh election.

Ibrahim, a businessman-turned-politician, represented Ondo South on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from June 13, 2023, until his recent appointment and confirmation as Nigeria’s envoy to the UN last month.
