Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has praised the state chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for its decision to resume work on 5 January, calling it a “patriotic and people-oriented” choice.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Saturday, Adeleke referred to the resolution as a positive development for grassroots governance. He noted that the workers’ commitment to return to work highlights the labour movement’s sensitivity to the community’s needs and aspirations. The governor expressed optimism that 5 January will signal a new beginning for enhanced services and social delivery to local residents.

Adeleke emphasised the importance of local governance in effectively reaching and serving the citizens. He also acknowledged the labour leaders for their faith in responsible leadership while commending police authorities for their recent actions aimed at maintaining law and order at various council secretariats.

“I must also appreciate the Inspector-General of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 11, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for their commitment to providing security during the lawful resumption of activities at the various council secretariats,” he stated.

The governor recognised the proactive measures taken by the police to avert potential disruptions and violence orchestrated by disruptive elements. He expressed hope that the police command will continue to uphold its directive to prevent any attempts to disrupt workers’ resumption of duty.

Adeleke reiterated his support for local government autonomy, emphasising that the presidential initiative aimed at decentralising governance is well-intentioned. However, he stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and due process in political matters.

“The constitution and laws governing local government systems must be adhered to in financial, administrative, and other areas. The legitimately elected leadership of local government should not be denied their rights to exercise their mandate,” he asserted.

The governor welcomed the workers’ return to their duties and commended the police and other security agencies for maintaining peace in the state. He concluded by stating, “Only under harmonious conditions can the dividends of democracy be effectively delivered. We need peace, unity, and adherence to democratic principles.”
