At the stroke of midnight on July 1, 2025, the cries of new life echoed through the maternity ward at Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, Lagos. But for five lucky new babies, their arrival marked not just the beginning of life but a celebration of community kindness.
Rotary Club of Iju Spring rolled out its “July Mother & Child” initiative by presenting special gift packs to the first five babies born on July 1, 2025. It is aimed to support families from the first day of their child’s life.
President of the club, Abisodun Ademefun, said: “This is a tradition for our club, every July 1st, we give gifts to the first five newborns. It’s a reflection of our values as Rotarians: to care for the needy, the less privileged, and humanity as a whole. This initiative is just one of many the club has planned for the year.
“I hope this message reaches far and wide, especially to those who have great wealth but are keeping it to themselves. God has called us to care for others. As Matthew 25 teaches, whatever we do for the least among us, we do for God. This is our calling
“Those with billions and trillions should remember the purpose of their blessings, to uplift others. That is the true service to God and humanity.”
Club’s project chairman, Ine Parkson, said: “This project is something we at Rotary have always stood for. Service to humanity is the true meaning of Rotary, and this gesture marks our commitment to that cause.”
Speaking on behalf of the hospital’s management, Dr. B. O. Castano, expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering generosity of the club for its continuous support for mothers and vulnerable groups, even in the face of limited personal resources:
“I’m short of words because you are never tired of giving. I remember moments when I simply mentioned a need and you were there. It’s incredibly encouraging, not just to me, but to all the mothers you’ve helped.”
