A young lady sustained multiple  injuries and a woman also had her legs fractured yesterday, as a result of an auto crash involving two vehicles around Iyana-Oworo, by Olopomeji inward Car Wash in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the incident.

According to preliminary investigations by LASTMA, the crash was precipitated by a white commercial Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number LSR 701 EF, which was reportedly overloaded and was also driven at an excessive speed.

The vehicle was said to have suffered sudden brake failure and rammed violently into a private car ahead of it. The impact of the collision resulted in extensive damage to the commercial Hiace bus and left the two passengers in a serious distress.

In a swift response, LASTMA officials arrived at the scene and administered emergency assistance. The two passengers tat suffered serious injuries were swiftly evacuated and handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) that transported them to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.

Security reinforcement was promptly provided by officers from the Alonge Police Division, who ensured crowd control and safety of the crash site while LASTMA operatives efficiently cleared the wreckage and evacuated all involved vehicles from the road to restore traffic flow.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a press statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, decried the growing trend of over-speeding and disregard for traffic safety protocols among commercial drivers.

He emphasised the importance of complying with the state government’s mandatory speed-limiting devices installed in commercial vehicles.

Bakare-Oki stressed that the measures were designed to curb road carnage and safeguard lives.

“We must collectively recognise that road safety is a shared responsibility. The installation of speed limiters is a deliberate policy to ensure that drivers operate within safe speed thresholds. This tragic incident might have been prevented had such regulations been followed,” he stated.
