A female undergraduate of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, has been kidnapped by suspected gunmen who also shot another person during an attack on an off-campus residential community in Plateau State.
The attack happened at about 8:40pm on Saturday in Bokkos Local Government Area, where several students live outside the university’s premises.
A student, who requested anonymity, told journalists in Jos on Sunday that the abducted undergraduate was in the company of another female student when the attackers seized her.
The victim is a 100-level student, but the source said he did not know her personally.
“Yes, the student was taken away by the attackers last night, and we have not seen her since then. She lives off-campus, but I don’t know her personally,” he said.
The student called on security agencies to intervene and ensure the victim’s safe return, expressing concern about the growing security threats around the university community.
A staff member of the institution also confirmed that the management had received reports of a shooting in an off-campus student residential area.
He disclosed that the latest incident was the second reported shooting involving the area within four weeks.

“The university is aware of a reported shooting incident in one of the off-campus student residential areas. This would be the second such incident in four weeks,” the staff member said.
He explained that although the attack took place outside the university’s premises, the management was concerned about the exposure of students living in nearby communities to security threats.
The staff member said the university had been working to provide more students with accommodation within the campus, but limited funds had affected its capacity.
According to him, the institution’s hostels currently have space for only about 1,000 students, despite its student population being close to 20,000.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the university’s Visitor, and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) towards infrastructure development.
The university, he said, would continue discussions with relevant authorities on expanding student accommodation and improving security arrangements.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain a response from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful. The command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
