In a world increasingly embracing renewable energy, Nigeria is at a pivotal moment in its journey toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels and leveraging its vast natural resources, particularly solar energy. However, the nation faces a significant challenge: the need for skilled local experts who can install, maintain, and troubleshoot renewable energy solutions. This gap in expertise is where the Solar Technicians Programme, spearheaded by the Greening Youth Foundation Africa (GYF Africa) in collaboration with Mactay Consulting and the Lagos State Government, comes into play.
Now in its second cohort, the Solar Technicians Programme is a transformative initiative designed to equip underrepresented youth and young adults with the skills necessary to thrive in Nigeria’s burgeoning solar energy industry. Over five intensive weeks, participants receive comprehensive, hands-on training in solar energy, covering everything from system installation to maintenance. Guided by industry professionals, the curriculum ensures that graduates leave not only with theoretical knowledge but also with the practical skills required to enter the workforce as skilled solar technicians. What sets this programme apart is its commitment to inclusivity: it provides free access to individuals from underserved communities who might not otherwise have the opportunity to acquire such valuable skills. This approach underscores the importance of corporate social responsibility and the intentional effort to create pathways for those most in need.
At the programme’s commencement, James Ezeilo, CEO of GYF Africa, highlighted the critical role of renewable energy in shaping Nigeria’s future. “This programme is not just about training,” Ezeilo remarked. “It’s about empowering the next generation of technicians who will be instrumental in solving Nigeria’s energy crisis. We are looking to the future, and with the challenges we face today, this programme provides a workforce that can turn these challenges into opportunities.”
The programme is addressing the critical shortage of skilled solar technicians in Nigeria, enabling the country to meet the growing demand for renewable energy solutions. It empowers underrepresented youth by providing free access to individuals from underserved communities, and creating opportunities for those who might not otherwise have access to such training. The graduates are contributing to Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve sustainable development goals, while the success stories of programme graduates are inspiring others to pursue careers in renewable energy.
The second cohort of the programme welcomed a diverse group of 52 participants, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity, where Madubuka Olisa and Ogbonna Chinaza Vivian emerged as the best graduating male and female students, respectively, showcasing the high quality of the training.
At the graduation ceremony, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, offered his support for the initiative. “I commend the organisers for this fantastic programme,” Ajigbotafe said. “Renewable energy is the future, and we must equip our youth with the skills they need to thrive in this sector. The Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment is ready to support future cohorts and expand the programme to reach even more young people.”
The programme is playing a vital role in empowering Nigeria’s youth and shaping a more sustainable future. By providing the necessary skills and opportunities, the programme is equipping graduates to become leaders in the renewable energy sector and contribute to the country’s transition to a cleaner, greener economy.
