The Democratic Youth Assembly of Nigeria has pledged its support for the Armed Forces of Nigeria and called for a strategic partnership with the Defence Headquarters to promote peace, national unity and public awareness on security matters.
The pledge was made during a courtesy visit by the leadership and members of the assembly to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa’s successor, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral S.A. Lawal, commended the assembly for the visit and praised Nigerian youths for their growing interest in national development and security.
According to him, engagement with youth groups remains critical to strengthening national cohesion and promoting collective efforts toward sustainable peace and stability.
Lawal noted that insecurity continues to pose significant challenges to the country, citing the activities of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, separatist groups and other criminal elements.
He, however, assured the youths that the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, remains committed to providing the necessary support and strategic direction to security agencies in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, remain committed to ongoing operations across various theatres to protect citizens, restore peace and safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity,” he said.
He urged young Nigerians to shun violence, extremism, misinformation and criminal activities, while embracing dialogue, peaceful coexistence and constructive engagement.
The defence chief also encouraged youths to support security agencies by providing credible information, promoting responsible use of social media and serving as ambassadors of peace in their communities.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the Democratic Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Amb. Bashir Nasiru Garki, commended the military for its sacrifices and efforts in combating insecurity across the country.
Garki said the achievements of the Armed Forces were often undermined by misinformation, disinformation and propaganda despite the progress recorded in various operational theatres.
He called for a formal partnership between the assembly and the Defence Headquarters to enhance public understanding of security issues, promote national unity and support peace-building initiatives.
The youth leader also pledged the support of Nigerian youths in countering misinformation and disinformation targeted at the military.
He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, praising his frontline leadership style, commitment to troop welfare and dedication to national security.
The visit ended with the presentation of a souvenir to the Chief of Defence Staff in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s defence and security.
