IGP visits police affairs minister, solicits welfare, operational support

From Molly Kilete, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has called on the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, to find a lasting solution to the lingering issue of pension and welfare affecting serving and retired police personnel.

The IGP, who made the appeal when he visited the minister in his office, also solicited his support in infrastructure, housing and funding to enhance the operational effectiveness of the force.

Disu, who said the visit underscored the cooperation between the ministry and the Nigeria Police Force in strengthening internal security, briefed the minister on preparations for the 2027 general elections, including ongoing personnel training and measures to address the security needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

He noted that continued institutional support would strengthen the force’s readiness to discharge its election-security responsibilities.

Welcoming the IGP to his office, the minister described the visit as timely and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the force’s operational development and reform priorities.

He commended the IGP’s efforts, stressed the importance of intelligence-led policing and highlighted interventions aimed at improving police infrastructure and personnel welfare, including pension and insurance arrangements.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, welcomed the IGP and his team and assured them of the ministry’s continued administrative support. He noted that closer collaboration would help identify priority needs, strengthen service delivery and build public confidence in the police.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Ministry of Police Affairs towards improving personnel welfare, strengthening operational capacity and safeguarding lives and property across the country.
