The Yobe State Government and UNICEF have constructed 450 components of VIP latrines to curb the menace of open defecation in areas affected by insurgency.
General Manager, Yobe Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Alhaji Mohammed Bukar, said this, on Tuesday, in Damaturu.
He said the state government constructed 250 units of toilets and bathroom each at Pompomari, Kukareta, and Muhammadu Gombe farm at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
“UNICEF also constructed 159 toilets in communities in Gujba and Gulani Local Government Areas, and 25 others at Kukareta camp,’’ Bukar said.
The manager said the state and it development partners also constructed and rehabilitated 120 water facilities to facilitate the return and resettlement of IDPs in their communities.
“Most of the water facilities in the communities had been vandalised and the people need safe, potable and close water facilities to enhance their return and resettlement,’’ Bukar said.
The manager said the state government rehabilitated a number of water facilities in Katarko, Buni Gari and other villages.
“UNICEF rehabilitated nine boreholes and converted them from motorised to solar powered in Gujba local government area, and constructed four others in Kukareta, Kasaisa and Pompomari IDP camps,’’ he said.
Bukar said the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) also constructed two boreholes in Gambir and Malumti villages in Damaturu local government area.
“The Action Against Hunger (ACF) constructed 10 boreholes and rehabilitated 20 others while, Medicine Sen Frontiers (MSF) constructed boreholes at the Maternal and Child Centre (MCH) in Damaturu and the Kukareta self established camp.
“CARITAS, a Catholic based organisation, also built and rehabilitated 28 water and sanitation facilities in some communities for returnees,’’ he said.
The manager commended the UNICEF, ACF, CARITAS, MSF, ICRC and the Nigeria Red Cross for massive emergency interventions through construction and rehabilitation of water facilities in communities affected the insurgency. (NAN)
