…Workers kick

Despite the dissolution of agencies, institutions and parastatals by the Federal Government, the Governing Council of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) met recently and took some decisions.
The Education Report learnt that the Prince Lateef Fabgemi-led governing council met from June 19 to 23.
The presence of governing council members on campus for the meeting generated ripples among YABATECH workers, as they queried their mission in the college.
President Bola Tinubu had recently announced the dissolution of all boards of agencies, parastatals and institutions with immediate effect.
A statement by the director for information in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Willie Bassey, said the chief executive officers of the affected agencies were directed to refer matters requiring attention of their boards to the President through the permanent secretary of their respective supervisory ministries and offices.
The Education Report gathering that many workers of the 76-year-old college were shocked to see governing council members on campus for the meeting, less than one week after government announced the council’s dissolution.
Both academic and non-academic staff described the meeting as illegal and insisted that any decision taken was void.
A source told The Education Report that the council defended their action because the Federal Government had not officially informed them of their dissolution.
“We were shocked that our dissolved governing council is still meeting. At this meeting, they are likely to ratify the appointment of deputy rector. The council said they have not gotten any letter of dissolution from the government.
“The reason given by the council is not tenable. Mr. President announced the dissolution of boards of institutions, agencies and parastatals. What else are they waiting for? Any decision they take may be challenged. They will be paid allowance using college resources, it is not fair. Staff are not happy with their presence on campus,’’ the source stated.
Fagbemi did not respond to text messages sent to him for his reaction.
