Coach of the Nigerian women’s wrestling team, Akuh Purity, has expressed delight following Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing World Wrestling Series Tournament in Mongolia, describing the achievement as evidence of the country’s ability to compete among the world’s best, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Reacting to the feat, Purity said the medal serves as a strong statement that Nigerian wrestlers can challenge elite athletes from top wrestling nations on the global stage.

“This medal proves that Nigeria can compete with the world’s leading wrestling nations and elite athletes,” Purity said.

The coach also noted that the tournament has provided valuable exposure and learning opportunities for both the athletes and the technical crew as they continue preparations for future international competitions.

“Our wrestlers have gained valuable experience from this tournament, and as their coach, I have also learned important lessons that I will take home to help improve their performance and better prepare them for future competitions, particularly the 2028 Summer Olympics,” she added.

Purity further appreciated the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for facilitating the team’s participation at the championship.

“I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for taking on this responsibility and making our participation possible,” she stated.

Nigeria secured its first medal of the competition on Friday, boosting hopes of more podium finishes as the tournament continues in Mongolia.
