Rotary International District 9127 has launched a mass immunization outreach against vaccine-derived polioviruses across FCT’s Six Area council starting on Thursday.

Dr Joy Nky Okoro, the District Governor, Rotary International District 9127 told journalists at a press conference, in Abuja, on Monday, that the mass immunization was in response to the growing cases of vaccine-derived polio virus, which is different from wild poliovirus.

She said: “In Nigeria, we have celebrated our monumental achievement of being declared free of the wild poliovirus. This stands as a testament to what is possible when government, partners, and communities work together. However, our work is not yet done.

“While we have eliminated the wild poliovirus, the threat of vaccine-derived polioviruses remains in under-immunized communities. This is a stark reminder that our vigilance can not waver. If we stop now, the virus might resurge with devastating consequences, paralyzing children and undoing decades of progress.

“This is why our theme for this year is “Finishing the Job: Our Legacy for a Polio-Free World. ” In line with this, Rotary District 9127, as the host of this year’s national celebration, has embarked on a week of impactful activities which includes awareness variety; picnics, horse rides, roller skaters, bikes, dance groups, cultural disspays and boat rigatta, among others designed to raise awareness and provide rescue to affected communities.

“The finish line is in sight. We have the tools, the strategy, and the resolve. With continued support from our partners, dedication from our health workers, and the powerful voice of the media, we will make polio the second human disease to be eradicated from the world. Let this be our lasting legacy, a safer, healthier world for every child.”

Dr. Okoro maintained that Rotary International, for decades, has been at the heart of the global fight against poliovirus. “As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), we have mobilized volunteers, raised awareness, and contributed over $2.6bn to this cause.

“Our members, over 1.4 million worldwide, have volunteered countless hours to ensure children receive this life-saving vaccine. Today, we stand on the precipice of making history because the progress is undeniable.

“We have achieved 99.9 per cent reduction in polio cases worldwide since 1988. Wild poliovirus is now endemic in only two countries; and over 3 billion children have been vaccinated, preventing more than 20 million cases of paralysis,” she highlighted.
