World Food Day: NGO raises awareness, seeks more support for women, children

By Faheem Lawal

Amid the worsening food crisis in Nigeria, the Tabitha Abimbola Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has called for more support for the vulnerable, especially women and children.

In a bid to raise awareness on the importance of assisting to those in need, the foundation organised a walk on Wednesday in Lagos, where the founder, Abimbola Adebiyi, emphasised the seriousness of the situation, citing World Bank reports that over a million people in Nigeria face severe food insecurity.

“We focus on helping indigent women and less privileged children. Our recent walkathon aimed to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition, especially on World Food Day. To address this, we need collective action from NGOs, corporate individuals, and governments. Agriculture, particularly homegrown farming, is crucial to solving Nigeria’s food challenges,” she said.

Abimbola said the foundation has collaborated with the Lagos State Government, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Ministry of Health, because, according to her, nobody can go it alone.

“We’ve enjoyed support from the government, and we’re grateful for that. Recently, we were part of an initiative that supported over 2,000 women with cash to boost their businesses. Our upcoming project, Free Health, will provide free health insurance to 200 women,” she said.
