Switzerland secured top place in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1 in Vancouver on Wednesday, while Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their qualification hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over Qatar.
The Swiss side produced a dominant second-half display at BC Place Stadium, with Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scoring within 11 minutes into the second half to put Murat Yakin’s men in control of the decisive group-stage encounter.
After a goalless first half, Vargas broke the deadlock just one minute after the restart, finishing from a Manzambi assist to give Switzerland the advantage. The pressure continued and 19-year-old Manzambi doubled the lead in the 57th minute after being set up by Breel Embolo.
Canada responded through Promise David in the 76th minute after Nabil Saliba’s assist reduced the deficit and set up a tense finale. Jesse Marsch’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, launching a series of late attacks and long throws into the Swiss penalty area.
