Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash at Estadio Monterrey on Tuesday.
The Atlas Lions completed a remarkable comeback after trailing late in normal time, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again emerging as the hero in the penalty shootout to send Morocco through to a last-16 meeting with Canada.
After a goalless first half, the Netherlands appeared to be heading for victory when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. The Liverpool forward, playing just two days after his partner announced the loss of their unborn baby, guided home from Crysencio Summerville’s cross to give Ronald Koeman’s side the advantage.
Morocco refused to surrender and found a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time through Issa Diop. The defender rose to meet Chemsdine Talbi’s delivery, sending the match into extra time and reigniting Morocco’s hopes of another memorable World Cup upset.
The North Africans came closest to winning the contest before penalties, but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a superb save to deny Soufiane Rahimi, ensuring the tie would be settled from the spot.
The shootout proved tense and unpredictable as both sides squandered opportunities. Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui struck the crossbar before Justin Kluivert hit the post for the Netherlands. Achraf Hakimi also rattled the woodwork, while Quinten Timber dragged his effort wide to hand Morocco another chance.
With the scores locked at 2-2, Sunderland winger Chemsdine Talbi and Dutch striker Wout Weghorst converted before Crysencio Summerville saw his penalty saved by Bounou. Morocco midfielder Ismael Saibari then calmly fired the winning penalty into the bottom corner, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.
The victory continues Morocco’s impressive rise on the international stage and sends them into the World Cup Round of 16, while the Netherlands exit the tournament despite dominating long spells of the contest. Morocco will now face Canada for a place in the quarter-finals.
