England captain Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to rescue the Three Lions from a shock exit, securing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo and booking a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

More than 68,000 fans at Atlanta Stadium watched England recover from an early setback after Beni Cipenga stunned the favourites with a seventh-minute strike that exposed England’s sluggish start.

After struggling to break down the resilient Congolese defence for much of the contest, England finally found a breakthrough in the 75th minute when Kane headed home Anthony Gordon’s cross before the skipper rifled home the winner 11 minutes later from another Gordon assist.

The victory sends England into a Round of 16 clash against Mexico at the historic Azteca Stadium on Monday, while DR Congo bow out after pushing one of the tournament favourites to the limit.

England’s comeback keeps alive hopes of a first World Cup title since 1966, but the performance also exposed areas Tuchel will need to address before facing co-hosts Mexico in the next round.
