Egypt secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after holding Iran to a dramatic 1-1 draw, with a stoppage-time Iranian winner ruled out by VAR.
The Pharaohs made a dream start in Seattle as Mahmoud Saber fired them ahead after just five minutes from Trezeguet’s assist. Iran responded quickly, with Ramin Rezaeian levelling nine minutes later after Mehdi Taremi had earlier seen a penalty saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier.
The second half produced few clear-cut chances, although Iran gradually took control as Egypt struggled to create openings despite the introduction of Omar Marmoush. Mohamed Salah was withdrawn midway through the half as Egypt looked to protect the result that would secure qualification.
The match exploded into life deep into stoppage time when veteran defender Shoja Khalilzadeh bundled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Iranian players.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving Iranian players devastated while Egypt celebrated qualification.
The 1-1 draw was enough for Egypt to finish second in Group G and book a place in the Round of 32, marking the country’s first-ever progression beyond the World Cup group stage.
Iran, meanwhile, were left anxiously waiting to discover whether their tally would be enough to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
