Ecuador secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany on Thursday to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage, overcoming an early setback and a controversial refereeing decision that sparked widespread debate.

Germany took the lead less than two minutes into the Group E encounter through Leroy Sané after Aleksandar Pavlović controlled a throw-in before setting up the attack. However, replays appeared to show Pavlović catching Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite in the face with a high boot moments before the goal.

Although the incident was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the goal stood, leaving Ecuadorian players and supporters furious. Referee Tori Penso maintained the decision after VAR official Joe Dickerson ruled there was no reason for an on-field review.

The disputed opener did little to unsettle Ecuador, who responded seven minutes later with their first goal of the tournament to level the contest at 1-1 and revive their hopes of reaching the Round of 32.

VAR was involved again in the second half, this time overturning a penalty initially awarded to Germany. After reviewing the challenge, officials cancelled the spot-kick and instead awarded Ecuador a free-kick outside the penalty area.

Ecuador completed the comeback in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata produced a composed finish to seal a famous 2-1 victory and send La Tri into the knockout stage.

The result rendered the earlier VAR controversy irrelevant to the final outcome, although the decision not to disallow Germany’s opening goal is expected to remain one of the tournament’s most debated officiating moments.

The victory marks only the second time Ecuador have progressed beyond the World Cup group stage, while Germany’s campaign ended in disappointment despite taking the early lead.
