FIFA World Cup knockout stage after fighting back to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta, earning their first-ever World Cup victory and booking a last-32 showdown with England.
The Congolese, making only their second World Cup appearance and first since 1974, recovered from an early setback after Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov fired his side ahead in the 10th minute from Azizbek Mozgovoy’s assist.
Despite dominating large spells of the contest, DR Congo struggled to convert their chances until Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa restored parity from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after sustained pressure.
The momentum swung decisively in favour of the Leopards, with Fiston Mayele completing the turnaround 10 minutes later before Wissa struck again in stoppage time, finishing calmly after Meschack Elia kept the move alive to seal a memorable victory.
The result lifted Sébastien Desabre’s side into the knockout rounds for the first time in the country’s history and marked DR Congo’s first World Cup win, more than five decades after their only previous appearance.
England now await the African side in the Round of 32 on Wednesday after finishing top of Group L with seven points.
