…Douses sleeping hubby with hot oil

From Tony John, Port Harcourt

A woman who poured hot groundnut oil on her husband, Mrs. Favour Nweke, has been arrested and paraded by the Rivers State Police Command, Port Harcourt.

Daily Sun gathered that the incident occurred in Igwuruta-Ali, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where they reside. The woman hails from Obite community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) and the husband from Okehi community in Etche LGA.

She was paraded alongside other suspects at the Rivers State Police Command, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, by the Commissioner of Police, CP Emeka Nwonyi, on Friday.

The suspect, who is a petty trader and mother of one, confessed to have committed the crime and asked for forgiveness. She added, however, that the claims by her husband against her were not true.

Her husband, Ekelediri Nwokekoro, after the incident, alleged that the wife’s younger sister was behind his quarrels with his wife.

The victim had narrated that: “I have told my wife’s younger sister to leave my house because of the way she started dressing, and the way she occupies my matrimonial bed even when I am around.

“No young guy will tolerate such behaviour. But my wife stopped the younger sister from leaving the house.

“I also saw my wife alone with one tall black guy in the shop I rented for her, not that he is in for business. He followed my wife and sister here and there.

“I gave that her younger sister N2,000 transport to go home so that I can actually understand what is going on in my house. But my wife got upset. While I went to bed to sleep, she used boiled groundnut oil on me. Then she started hitting me with a hammer.”

She apologized to members of the public that she overreacted. She added that her husband recently developed strange behaviour, alleging that it was linked to a crime he committed with his friends.

According to her, their quarrel started when she confronted the husband over his strange behaviour and involvement in crime.

She said: “He would go out at about 2am and would come back early in the morning. Sometimes, he would go and stay two or three days before coming back. Then I asked him, where are you even going?

“So, his friends called me and asked me if I had heard what was on the ground. I said, ‘what is that? He said my husband and some people were involved in one illegal act.

“He said they called somebody from Abuja, that the person should come and work in Etche, and that they have a contract to give to the person. And when the person came, they duped the person  of N20 million.

“I said he didn’t tell me, that I was hearing it for the first time. I said, ‘No wonder this guy (referring to her husband) has been acting strange, planning on how to travel and go to one African country. So, this is the reason.’

“When he came back that evening, I grabbed him and said this is what I heard, and confronted him. But he denied it and we quarrelled. We ended it that day.

“I asked him what he did with his own share of the money. I heard some people bought things with their own. So, what did you use your own to do?”

According to her, as they were quarreling that morning, her husband hit her.

“As he hit me, I ran into the kitchen for that oil, and I poured it on him. That was what happened.”

The suspect denied her husband’s accusation of any extramarital affair before the incident. She also denied the victim’s claim that she was using the purported “tall black man” as  a cover for her amorous relationship.

“My sister came and normally, as a small girl, boys must come for you. That day of the incident, I called my husband on phone that he should come and carry us because I did not have money for (my sister and I) for transport.

“The allegation that I am going out with any man is a lie. My shop is close to where we live,” she said.

She pleaded for forgiveness and regretted her action, but said that Nigerians should hear her own side of the story. The young woman said that if she knew the squabble would lead to the present situation, she would have left the scene for her parents’ house.

Mrs. Nweke said: “I feel bad. Had I known that this thing would turn out like this, I would not have done it to him. I would just have gone to my place to stay. I am begging Nigerians, you people should, please, forgive me. I overreacted.”

She denied the allegation by her husband that he was attacked when he was asleep, saying that they were fighting that morning.

However, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, has said that the suspect would be prosecuted and made to face the consequences of her action.

He said: “I can assure you that the law will catch up with her and anybody who tries to take the law into their hands will be made to face the necessary sanctions.”
