He is a man with the Midas touch.
As a filmmaker and TV producer, whatever he touches turns to gold. Remember Tinsel, Hush, The Johnsons, Voiceless and several other productions? And now the Showmax Original, Wura! Well, the production genius behind them all is the award winning Rogers Ofime.
But how has he been able to raise the bar of film/TV production in sub-Saharan Africa? He bared it all in this rare interview. Please enjoy it.
What inspired the creation of Wura, and how does it stand out from other telenovelas?
It’s a phone call and charge to create a telenovela; adapted but original to Nigeria, our situation and environment. Nigerian productions have taken a giant leap forward in delivering good content to a dynamic audience, Wura just pushed the envelope or should I say a bar higher.
Telenovelas are known for their passionate fan base. What elements in Wura do you believe resonated strongly with the viewers and kept them hooked?
I think it’s the wholesomness of the show; from acting to picture, technicality and interpretation by our directors. You know, everyone loves a good show; give it to them and they will love and follow completely.
The cast plays a crucial role in any telenovela’s success. Can you share some insights into the casting process for Wura, and why you chose specific actors for key roles?
Every actor on the show got there on merit and strength of their craft. Even, if you know this person can deliver, there are hundreds of others equally as good. But of course, owning the character from the audition process (which was 5-month long) is key, and sets you apart. Consistency after a long drawn out process is rare; the desire to be gets you to be.
Wura explores various themes and emotions. Which particular aspect of the show do you think will leave the most significant impact on the audience?
How a villain can be so good at being bad you have no choice but love them. Honestly, every aspect of the story leaves an indelible mark and following. Wura is truly Gold!
The production of a telenovela can be a massive undertaking. What were the most significant challenges you faced during the creation of Wura, and how did you overcome them?
Location scouting, settling for the location, building sets, casting, accommodation, and bearing in mind that it’s 11 months project, so comfort and functionality takes centre stage. We had a solid team that put in the work and gave account of their crafts.
In a world dominated by streaming platforms, how do you plan to make Wura accessible to viewers globally, and what role do you think international audiences will play in the show’s success?
Wura is a Showmax original, which is a streaming platform and I’m sure the managements of Showmax, MNET and Africa Magic have thought this through and will definitely let everyone know their plans, according to their timing.
As the executive producer, what are your hopes and expectations for Wura? How do you envision the show making an impact in the entertainment industry?
I think it is time for Nigerians to let the world know that with the right support and collaboration, we can deliver worldclass enetertainment that can hold a global audience spellbound during its run and years after as a masterpiece. That is what Wura is; a masterpiece and game changer like our pay off line goes, ‘Redefining Creativity’.
Telenovelas have a knack for addressing relevant social issues. Does Wura tackle any such topics, and what message do you hope the audience takes away from the show?
All social issues are catered to in Wura; from oppression to gap between the rich and the poor, from work ethics and environmental issues to workers’ unrest… the list goes on and on. But the main thing I would like the viewers to take away from this is: live your life in truth and service to mankind, and your legacy will build a nation.
The chemistry between characters is vital in any romantic telenovela. How did you work with the actors to develop authentic connections between their characters in Wura?
That chemistry was honed by the directors of the show. They brought out the best in every actor, which I dare say is evident throughout the show.
The popularity of streaming services has changed viewers’ watching habits. Will Wura be released all at once or in a traditional episodic format, and what led to this decision?
Again, this decision lies with the networks, Showmax, MNET and Africa Magic. They will make this known according to their timing. What I can say is, buckle up because Wura is about to blow you away with season 2.
What excites you the most about Wura, and why do you believe audiences worldwide should tune in to watch the show?
Everything, especially the time and efforts put in to bring this wonderful story to your phones, laptops and screens, and to a worldwide audience. What are you looking for? Look no further because Wura’s got you covered.
As a producer, what’s next for you after Wura?
There is a whole new world of originality out there, and I shall explore it to continue giving my fans something to look forward to. Like we say in Native Media, we’re ‘Redefining Creativity’.
