Wike: No security threat in FCT

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has declared that  there are no security threats in the nation’s capital to warrant shutdown of schools.

Wike stated this after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in Guzape, Abuja on Wednesday.

He said he had not directed the closure of schools.

“It is unimaginable how people could take such a decision without the head of the affairs knowing.

“It’s very unfortunate. “I was watching television last night and a news that FCT has directed that schools should be shut down.

“I couldn’t believe it, so I had to call the Mandate Secretary of Education Secretariat and of course, he couldn’t reply then I had to get to the details.

“I came to know about the circular that was given to all the schools without our approval.

“I know that we are having a security council meeting today, so I called the Commissioner of Police and other authorities and I said, who did this?

“They said, it’s not in their agenda and there’s no way because we don’t have such a threat that will make us shut down the schools.”

Meanwhile, Security agencies across the FCT have launched an extensive operation aimed at enhancing safety in Abuja.

The initiative, named “Operation Sweep,” was reaffirmed during an expanded security meeting led by the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Miller Dantawaye, announced on Tuesday that the operation now covers four key sectors: Gwagwalada, Bwari, the city centre, and adjacent border communities.

He praised the FCT Minister’s support, stating, “The FCT Minister, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, in his wisdom has provided adequate logistics for this operation, and it has been fully kick-started.”

CP Dantawaye also confirmed heightened vigilance in educational institutions throughout the territory. “We have activated very robust interaction with schools, gathering as much intelligence as we can get,” he said, noting that schools are now under active patrol, profiling, and intelligence monitoring.
