Why every governor should go for gold

By Mike Awoyinfa and Femi Kolawole

Everywhere you go in Nigeria, you hear people talking about one thing: good leadership. We all want leaders who can make a real difference, who can build better communities and a brighter future for us all. This isn’t just a wish; it’s a call for action for everyone in power. And that’s why we are so excited to tell you about a new project: The Governors on Leadership and Democracy – we call it The GOLD Project.

To our respected state governors, we are writing this as a personal invitation. This isn’t just another programme. It’s a special chance to lift up how we lead in Nigeria, to build a lasting legacy, and to change the story of our country for the better.

Nigeria’s journey depends a lot on its leaders. From the day we became independent to the problems we face today, our progress has always been shaped by the choices, ideas, and character of those in charge. But when we talk about “leadership” in Nigeria, it often brings up feelings of frustration, thoughts about chances we’ve missed, and a strong desire for something different, something better.

The GOLD Project comes from truly understanding what Nigerians want and believing in the huge potential of our state governors. We know that each of you has a unique story, a special path that led you to become governor. These aren’t just political stories; they are rich tales full of ambition, hard work, learning, and strength.

And that’s exactly where The GOLD Project begins. We want to sit down with you for open and honest conversations. Think about how powerful it would be to share your personal leadership journey:

• How did you become a leader? What were the key moments, the big decisions, the early people who influenced how you saw and chased leadership? These stories will teach a lot to young people who want to lead and show a real, human side to serving the public.

• Who are the leaders that inspire you? From famous people around the world to local heroes, the people who light your fire tell us a lot about what you value and what you hope for your state and Nigeria. Sharing these inspirations will create a powerful picture of what good leadership looks like.

• Who were your mentors and role models? No leader gets there alone. The advice, wisdom, and example of those who came before you are very important to your growth. Talking about these relationships will show why it’s so important to have mentors and how knowledge is passed down.

• How do you define leadership? This question might seem simple, but it tells us a lot. Your own definition will show your approach to governing, your main beliefs, and the ideas that guide your decisions. It will be a window into the mind of a governor, helping people understand things more clearly.

• What do you see as the problem of leadership in Nigeria? As people who are actually leading states, your thoughts on this big national challenge are extremely important. Your honest opinions won’t just help us understand the problems better, but also help us find ways to work together for lasting solutions.

• What has been your biggest leadership challenge as a state governor? From money problems to security issues, bad roads to community disagreements, being governor comes with huge challenges. Sharing these personal struggles, the times you doubted yourself, and how you managed to get through them will offer practical lessons and help governors feel a sense of shared purpose.

• What leadership lessons have you learnt along the way? Every experience, every win, every setback teaches you something. Taking these valuable lessons and turning them into useful advice will light the way for future leaders and show the path to better governance.

The good things that come from you joining The GOLD Project go far beyond just thinking about yourself. Think about the positive effect:

For Your State and Its People: Your willingness to talk openly, to share, and to learn in public will show a new level of openness and responsibility. It will help you connect more deeply with the people you govern, letting them understand the hard work and different sides of running a state. Plus, just the act of thinking deeply for these interviews can make your plans better, refresh your ideas, and lead to more effective actions. Good governance, as studies always show, is directly linked to strong, honest, and flexible leadership. Your involvement will directly help your state become more developed, safer, and richer.

For Nigeria as a Whole: The GOLD Project wants to build a rich collection of leadership knowledge and experiences from all states. This shared wisdom, when put together and looked at, can show common problems and lead to new, smart solutions. It can help states learn from each other and work together, going beyond political differences and building a stronger Nigeria. Imagine a future where governors can use a shared pool of best practices, inspired by the successes and lessons of their fellow governors. This project offers a special way for leaders to learn from each other, which is key for our country to move forward.

For Future Leaders: The lessons learned from your participation will become a very important teaching resource. Students, young politicians, and young professionals will have real-life examples, true leadership stories, and practical lessons from those who have actually done the job. This is an investment in Nigeria’s brainpower and leadership ability, preparing a generation better equipped to handle the challenges of leading.

For Your Own Legacy: In a country that often criticises, The GOLD Project gives you a special chance to tell your own story, to clearly state your vision, and to leave a lasting mark on leadership in Nigeria. It’s a chance to be part of something bigger – a movement focused on making learning, adapting, and excellence a regular part of how we govern.

Let’s work together to turn the challenge of leadership in Nigeria into a chance for amazing growth and development. Let’s set the GOLD standard for how we govern, not just for today, but for generations to come. Your stories matter. Your lessons are vital. Your involvement will be gold for Nigeria.
