Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that Marcus Rashford was withdrawn during the club’s 2-2 draw with Everton on Sunday after the forward began “feeling a bit of something”.
Rashford started the Premier League encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium and was substituted in the 70th minute after producing a lively performance and posing a consistent threat to Everton’s defence.
Explaining the decision after the match, Carrick said Rashford had looked sharp since returning to the team and had created several opportunities despite failing to find the decisive final touch.
“He’s done very well. As I said during the week, he’s done ever so well since he came back. I thought he looked really sharp again today and dangerous,” Carrick said.
United twice led in the contest but were unable to hold on to the advantage. Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead before Tyrique George equalised for Everton, while Benjamin Šeško restored United’s lead.
However, Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck late to earn Everton a point, leaving Carrick frustrated after his side had been close to securing victory.
“We’re disappointed, bitterly disappointed,” Carrick said. “To be up in the position we were in, [leading] the game twice and so close to the end.”
The result also continued United’s concerns over their defensive record, with the manager acknowledging that his side must reduce the number of goals conceded. United have now conceded twice in each of their first three league matches.
Carrick, however, rejected suggestions that United had made a poor start to the campaign, pointing to how close his side came to taking all three points against Everton.
“We haven’t started the season that bad, to be honest,” he said, adding that United had played good football through the middle and created danger on the left through the combination of Rashford and Luke Shaw.
United have collected four points from their opening three Premier League matches, with Carrick now facing the task of improving their defensive consistency while maintaining the attacking threat that was evident against Everton.
