The Sun Nigeria

Where identity stops being aesthetic

By Seun Emmanuel

Fashion has long relied on identity as a tool for connection and recognition. Individuals often gravitate towards brands that offer a sense of belonging, distinction, or cultural alignment. Within this framework, fashion labels that successfully communicate identity through design tend to maintain stronger relevance in contemporary style conversations.

For years, the fashion industry has recognised the power of identification, and many brands have strategically leaned into it. Blvck Kulture is one such labels that has captured this essence through simple yet deliberate branding. By presenting casual streetwear infused with subtle African references, the brand aligns itself with a growing movement that values both cultural awareness and everyday wearability.

Founded by Razaq Ayomide Rahman, Blvck Kulture is a ready-to-wear fashion label that positions itself within African streetwear. The brand focuses on exclusivity, comfort, and accessibility while maintaining a strong emphasis on African identity. Its designs are created to be inclusive, wearable, and suitable for everyday use without sacrificing quality or meaning.

As part of its cultural positioning, Blvck Kulture promotes African heritage by reducing the barriers often associated with accessing African-inspired fashion, while also embracing diversity and gender inclusivity. The collection appears to be inspired by everyday African urban life, where simplicity, comfort, and identity take priority over excess or dramatic form. This approach reflects an intentional effort to build a fashion culture that is accessible. The 2022 collection consists of simple, branded streetwear pieces that prioritise comfort, versatility, and identity-driven design.

Let’s take a look…

The first outfit in this collection is an easy and lovely piece. It is a midnight blue T-shirt made from fine cotton fabric mixed with polyester material. The texture of the fabric is thick and vibrant. The colour shines through the background and looks like an outfit that will not easily wear out. It starts with a round neckline that relaxes perfectly on the body’s structure of the shoulders. It is followed by short sleeves, and the rest of the bodice falls to the hip area, where it stops. The insightful part of this design is the imprint, ‘BLVCK’,made on the chest line with a white Plastisol ink, which makes it stand out amid the dark coloured background.

Paired with black joggers and sneakers, this look keeps ‘Casual’ simple, noticed, and neat, allowing both malesand females the luxury of looking good, unapologetically.

The next attire in the Blvck collection is a pale pink T-shirt also made from a top-grade cotton fabric mixed with polyester material. Like the first of the collection, it begins with a round neckline, followed by short sleeves and a bodice that falls to the waist area, unlike the first, which went slightly beyond. The interesting facet of this T-shirt is also the imprint, ‘BLVCK’, made on the chest line with a black Plastisol ink, which makes it pop. In contrast to the first piece, a little spicy detail was added to the print on this shirt. In place of the ‘V’ in the BLVCK, the shape of the African continent on the world map was used as a symbol that speaks beyond the word BLACK and identifies with the African heritage. The T-shirt was also designed as a Unisex garment that can be utilised by both men and women to look good.

Now, this is different. Finally, on the rack is a plain white T-shirt equally crafted from a cotton fabric blended with polyester material. It carries the same features as the first two pieces, spotting a round neckline, accompanied by short sleeves and the rest of the top that drops to the waistline. Unlike the other two in the collection, this piece is devoid of an imprint, remaining plain. It is a Unisex piece like the rest; the ensemble allows for both male and female use.

What truly makes this collection stand out is its simplicity, neat finish and excellent pairing. For an individual who really doesn’t want to do too much, or maybe just wants to have a casual date with friends, this is a good pick. This collection could also serve as abridge between casual dressing and intentional style, making it suitable for both relaxed outings and semi-casual settings.

One of the strengths of the collection also lies in its versatility. The T-shirts function effectively as smart-casual staples and can be styled across various settings. Their simplicity allows for flexible pairing with joggers, trousers, skirts, denim, and shorts, making them adaptable to different personal styles and occasions.

However, despite its clean execution, the collection shows limited experimentation. Beyond the branded chest prints, the designs offer minimal visual elements that strongly communicate African heritage. While the branding is effective, the absence of additional cultural detailing restricts the collection’s creative depth. Incorporating subtle accents such as African-inspired fabric inserts or pattern detailing could further strengthen the brand’s identity without compromising its minimalist approach.

In assessing the three unisex T-shirts in midnight blue, pale pink, and white, the collection demonstrates a consistent balance of comfort, wearability, and aesthetic restraint. The midnight blue piece offers a refined and polished feel, while the pale pink design introduces softness without compromising neutrality. The plain white T-shirt provides a timeless option that anchors the collection in simplicity.

Compared to brands such as Ashluxe and Vivendii, BlvckKulture adopts a more restrained approach to African streetwear. While the former brands often rely on bold prints, layered textures, and high-impact visuals to communicate identity, Blvck Kulture places greater emphasis on subtle branding, comfort, and unisex appeal. This design direction prioritises ease of wear and everyday relevance over statement-making aesthetics. As a result, the label positions itself as practical and accessible to a wider audience, particularly those who prefer minimal styling. However, this restraint also limits experimentation in silhouette, fabric choice, and surface design, making the collection feel more conservative when placed alongside its contemporaries.

In essence, The Blvck Kulture 2022 collection contributes to contemporary African streetwear by prioritising simplicity, inclusivity, and everyday functionality. Through clean silhouettes and restrained branding, the collection positions itself as wearable fashion that fits easily into daily life. While the designs successfully deliver comfort and versatility, the collection falls short in fully exploring creative expressions of African heritage beyond branding, as cultural references remain subtle and limited in form. Its significance lies in its ability to present African-inspired streetwear as unisex, accessible, and practical, appealing to a wide audience without sacrificing identity. By choosing simplicity over bold experimentation, the collection offers a strong foundation for future creative expansion. As a result, it represents a measured but important step in the evolving conversation around modern African fashion, particularly in how heritage can be translated into everyday urban wear.
