National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has said the party is determined to resist any plot aimed at imposing a one-party system on the country.

Mark, in a statement by his media office, yesterday, dismissed reports that he has stepped down as national chairman of the ADC, noting that he is not contemplating resignation.

The ADC has been in crisis since last week when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition from the Mark led National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition party, citing a Court of Appeal verdict.

Former National Vice Chairman of the ADC, Nafiu Gombe, has been laying claims to the leadership of the ADC. Recently, the Court of Appeal directed parties to the dispute by main status quo ante bellum.

Mark, a former Senate president, described reports purporting that he has resigned as national chairman as “an insidious fabrication” orchestrated by  “puerile, weak and inconsiderate propagandists.”

He noted that the ADC leadership remains united, focused, and resolute in its mission to strengthen democratic values and provide credible leadership to Nigerians.

According to him, attempts to destabilise the party are driven by fear of the ADC’s growing influence and the emerging political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The assertion that Senator David Mark has stepped down exists only in the warped imagination of those bent on spreading falsehood and creating confusion within our party.

“The ADC, its leadership, and the majority of Nigerians are unbending in their collective determination to resist any plot aimed at undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy or imposing a one-party system.”

Meanwhile, Mark, in a statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, on the occasion of the Easter celebration, charged Nigerians to embrace religious harmony, peace, and national unity.

The ADC leader, who described Easter as a season that embodies sacrifice, hope, renewal and the triumph of light over darkness, urged citizens to reflect on the virtues of love, selflessness, and forgiveness as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

The former Senate president, while reassuring Nigerians about the state of the ADC, stated  that the party remains strong, united, and unshaken despite recent challenges.

“ADC remains focused and unwavering in its mission to enthrone democratic ethos, uphold the rule of law, and provide purposeful leadership that addresses the needs and aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.
