With the growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases, fueled by poor nutritional choices and very little exercise, Nigerians have been urged to rediscover the joy and health benefits of walking and putting their legs to good use.

Respected FMCG marketing specialist, health advocate and Wakathon Foundation, Mr Lorenz Mba, reiterated this in a statement announcing modalities for holding the Wakathon 2026. He described Wakathon as a strategic public health response to the increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases in urban communities.

“Wakathon 2026 is offering Lagos a powerful yet simple solution: walk. What began as a grassroots wellness idea has evolved into a continent-facing public health movement, using the most accessible form of exercise to drive preventive healthcare, mental well-being, and social connection.

“This 2026 edition of Wakathon will be a large-scale community walking initiative aimed at promoting preventive healthcare, mental wellness, and healthier lifestyle choices among Lagos residents,” he stated.

Mba explained that Wakathon was designed to encourage people to integrate physical activity into their daily routines through simple, accessible actions such as walking.

Unlike competitive sporting events, Wakathon adopts a non-competitive and inclusive approach, welcoming seniors, families, professionals, and first-time participants in a supportive environment focused on wellness rather than performance.

Mba further disclosed that the 2026 edition is being held in honour of Dr Ade Alakija, in partnership with Q-life and HEI. It will feature health education sessions on hydration, nutrition, sleep, mental wellness, and healthy ageing.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, by 7:00am at the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase One, with organisers confirming that participants will also benefit from free health screening as part of the programme.

Founded in 2021, Waka Community International Foundation has expanded into a global wellness movement with members in over 48 countries, promoting health through five core pillars: walking, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and mental well-being.
