In a climate of increased travel activity, VFS Global has raised alarms about the rising threat of fraudulent schemes targeting visa applicants in Nigeria.
As the world’s leading outsourcing and technology services provider for governments, VFS Global urges applicants to stay vigilant against scammers offering false promises of expedited visa appointments for a fee.
During a media briefing in Lagos, Mr. Alok Singhal, Head of Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa at VFS Global, emphasized the dangers posed by these fraudsters. “We strongly advise all applicants to be cautious of touts and fraudulent parties who falsely promise early appointment bookings in exchange for payment,” Singhal warned.
Surge in Outbound Travel Sparks Fraud
With post-pandemic travel rebounding, visa applications from Nigeria have soared, nearly doubling in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Top destinations for Nigerian travelers include Canada, China, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia. As a result, demand for visa appointments is at an all-time high, creating opportunities for scammers to exploit unsuspecting applicants.
Fraudsters, posing as VFS Global representatives or agents, lure applicants with promises of quicker visa appointments. These criminals often create fake websites or social media profiles using VFS Global’s credentials to deceive travelers.
Official Processes and Anti-Fraud Measures
To combat these scams, VFS Global has introduced several measures. First and foremost, visa appointments are free and can only be booked on the official website, on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, only applicants with valid appointments will be allowed entry into the VFS Global centers.
VFS Global has also implemented a facial recognition system for booking appointments with the Portugal Embassy, a move aimed at enhancing security. Furthermore, an OTP system has been introduced for appointments with Canada to minimize the influence of third-party agents.
The company has taken steps to educate applicants by circulating anti-fraud messages across its social media platforms and including warnings in appointment letters and voice messages from call centers. Applicants are encouraged to report any suspicious activity by contacting VFS Global directly via email.
No Role In Decision Making
Singhal reminded applicants that VFS Global’s role is purely administrative, handling non-judgmental tasks related to visa, passport, and consular services. The availability of visa appointments and the processing time remain the prerogative of the respective embassies and consulates.
“Opting for value-added services such as Prime Time or Visa At Your Doorstep does not guarantee a quicker or more favorable visa decision,” he clarified.
Avoid Common Visa Application Pitfalls
Visa applicants are advised to double-check their documentation to avoid rejections due to incomplete or incorrect information. VFS Global provides an optional form-filling service to help applicants ensure their information is accurate.
Refund Policy and Service Growth
In cases where applicants are overcharged or mistakenly charged more than once, VFS Global offers a refund policy. However, visa fees paid to the respective governments are non-refundable. Refunds can be requested within 30 days of appointment cancellation.
Since its launch in Nigeria in 2007, VFS Global has expanded its operations significantly, now handling visa services for 16 governments, including Austria, Canada, China, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia.
