VDI unveils pad bank, distributes scholarly materials in FCT

In a significant boost to special needs education, Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI), has distributed scholarly materials and launched pad bank for the Special School of the Blind, Jabi, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, to curb period poverty.

The event drew dignitaries from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), FCT Universal Basic Education Board (FCT-UBEB), FCT Education Resource Centre (FCT-ERC), FCT Special Education Board (FCT-SEB), Federal Ministry of Education (FMoE), and the FCT Department of Special Needs Education.

VDI executive director, Catherine Edeh, said she was moved by the plights of indigent pupils, stressing that at this time girls still suffer period poverty.

According to her, in a testament to VDI’s commitment to promoting inclusive education, “the event has provided a platform for stakeholders to express their admiration and unflinching support for the organization’s work in advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities across the country.

Edeh said the outcome of the event underscored VDI’s dedication to promoting inclusive education and empowering persons with disabilities, and highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnership in advancing special needs education in Nigeria.

“We are thrilled to be part of this initiative, which is making a tangible impact on the lives of students with special needs,” she added.

Representatives from the students, and staff of the Schools for the Deaf Kuje, Special Needs Children Kuje, and Blind Jabi also attended the event (who are the target beneficiaries of this initiative ). The event was marked by an atmosphere of joy and appreciation.

“I am impressed by the level of enthusiasm and participation from the students and staff,” said a representative of the FCT-ERC, Peter Mohammed, who also pledged to feature VDI’s activities in their organization’s magazine and invite the organization for speaking engagements.

The event featured a special song presentation by students of the School for the Blind Jabi, which brought the audience to their feet.

The students and staff of the three schools expressed their gratitude to VDI and its funders (IGNITE-UAF and AFD- FOS FEMINISTA) for the scholarly materials and pad bank, which will enhance their learning experience and lives of the adolescent girls in the schools.
