A Professor of Adult Learning and Special Education, Prof. Williams Obiozor, has advocated for more support and inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the society.
Prof Obiozor made the call at the 97th inaugural lecture series of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
The professor, who delivered the lecture, titled: “The Paradigm Shift in Promoting Adult Learning, Inclusion Needs of Persons With Disabilities in a Work and Learning Environment,” emphasised the need to protect the rights of PWDs as integral members of society.
According to Obiozor, “There is an urgent need for a shift from the traditional norms about disabilities to an inclusive learning environment, and employment opportunities. We should look at something that makes them better. Full to access education and an inclusive environment is a good way.
“Having a good classroom makes it easier for them to acquire education and be useful in society.
“Employers need to allow them to excel. They should be tolerant when they make mistakes because they are human beings like us and make mistakes like us.”
Obiozor, also the Director, Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), Unizik, emphasised the holistic needs of people with disabilities, including suitable housing, disability-friendly workplaces, social connections, flexible work arrangements, collaborative learning opportunities, and support systems to foster their well-being.
He called for assistance in providing learning materials, payment of school fees, and the protection of their rights. He urged the government to grant PWDs also free access to education and empower them for more significant societal engagement.
