US Supreme Court rejects Trump’s bid to curb birthright citizenship

Donald Trump

The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, reaffirming that nearly everyone born on American soil remains entitled to US citizenship under the Constitution.

In a closely watched ruling delivered on the final day of its current term, the court voted 6-3 to preserve the long-established interpretation which guarantees citizenship to people born in the United States regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

The decision deals a significant legal setback to the Trump administration, which had sought to narrow the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship through executive action and subsequent legal challenges.

The ruling means that children born in the United States will continue to automatically acquire American citizenship, maintaining a principle that has been a cornerstone of US constitutional law for more than a century.

The Supreme Court’s judgment is expected to have far-reaching implications for immigration policy and future legal efforts to redefine citizenship rights in the United States.

The decision was announced on the final sitting day of the court’s current judicial term.
