US government shutdown now longest in history

US govt shutdown

The United States government shutdown is now the longest ever, going beyond the 35-day record during President Donald Trump’s first term.

The new record became official on Wednesday, with the current administration warning of holiday air travel chaos in what threatens citizens’ benefits amid the quest for a resolution.

Since the failure of Congress to approve funding past September 30, welfare programs have become stuck in limbo, including aid for millions to purchase groceries.

Hours before midnight on Tuesday, the Trump administration raised an alarm over commotion at airports nationwide should the crisis linger beyond a sixth week.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a news conference in Philadelphia, “So if you bring us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos…you will see mass flight delays.

“You’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it because we don’t have the air traffic controllers.”
