United States Department of State has announced a significant update to its visa reciprocity policy, which will now affect Nigerian citizens seeking non-immigrant, non-diplomatic U.S. visas.
According to the statement, effective immediately, most such visas issued to Nigerians will be single-entry with a validity period of three months.
In a statement from the US Embassy in Abuja, officials clarified that visas issued before July 8, 2025, will maintain their current status and validity. The Embassy emphasized that visa reciprocity is a dynamic process subject to ongoing review and adjustment, depending on evolving security and diplomatic considerations.
“We want to underscore that visa reciprocity is a continuous process and subject to change at any time, including adjustments to the number of permitted entries and the duration of visa validity,” the statement read.
Travelers are encouraged to consult the latest visa reciprocity schedules available on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
The updated policy aligns with the US commitment to uphold the integrity of its immigration system by adhering to global security benchmarks. These include ensuring secure travel documents, managing visa overstays, and sharing relevant security information with partner countries.
“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity,” the Embassy said. “We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices and continue to engage with Nigerian officials to address remaining challenges.”
The statement urged Nigerian travelers to comply strictly with visa terms and ensure their travel documents are authentic and current. The US Embassy reaffirmed its dedication to fostering people-to-people ties through business, educational, and cultural exchanges.
“We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries,” the release concluded.
