US deal rejected by Iran after 21-hour peace talks

Trump and Khamenei

Iran has rejected a deal from the United States of America after peace talks that lasted 21 hours in Islamabad, Pakistan, over the conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking with reporters at the Serena Hotel on Saturday, Vice President JD Vance called the development bad news for Iran after both parties failed to reach an agreement.

“We’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians — that’s the good news.

“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it is for the United States,” Vance stated.

According to Vance, Iran refused to commit to halting its pursuit of nuclear weapons, despite the U.S. delegation making clear its red lines.

“We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon and will not pursue the tools to quickly achieve one,” he noted.

Led by Vance alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the peace talks came on the heels of a fragile truce between the US and Iran after a conflict that ravaged the Middle East for six weeks.

Spearheading the Iranian team was Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.

While choosing not to disclose next steps, Vance harped on the US proposal being its  “final and best offer”, adding that he had been in constant contact with President Donald Trump throughout the negotiations.
