Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive received a boost on Friday as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) launched its Country Programme for Nigeria (2026–2030), with a strong focus on tackling corruption and illicit financial flows.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, described the initiative as timely, noting that corruption remains a major obstacle to both national and global development.

He stressed that the growing sophistication of transnational crimes, including corruption, cyber-enabled offences, and terrorism, demanded urgent and coordinated responses.

According to him, criminal networks were increasingly exploiting technology, global financial systems, and governance gaps to move illicit funds across borders.

“The emphasis on combating corruption and illicit financial flows is particularly significant, given the enormous economic and social costs they impose,” Olukoyede said, adding that sustained and collaborative efforts are needed to reverse the trend.

The EFCC boss highlighted the importance of strong institutions and international cooperation in addressing these threats, commending the long-standing partnership between the commission and the UNODC.

He expressed confidence that the new programme would enhance capacity building, promote inter-agency collaboration, and strengthen data-driven strategies in tackling organised crime.
