The Enugu State College of Education, Technical, (ESCET) Enugu,  has held a joint matriculation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where 300 new students participated.

The event, which was held at the Convocation Arena of ESCET on Friday was for the 2022/2023 NCE, PDE of the college, the first set of degree students to be matriculated in affiliation with the University of Nigeria.

Speaking during the event, the Provost of the College, Dr Stella Ekwueme, highlighted the significance of the teaching profession to national development, adding that the future of the nation rests in the hands of the students.

She noted that the Collage environment provides every opportunity to prepare the students for the task of nation building, while the availability of quality staff in the collage underscores its readiness to put them on the right track.

“Your admission into the College marks the beginning of your journey towards personal and national development. The task before you is herculean as prospective teachers who will become character moulders. This is because the status of any nation is dependent on the quality of her teachers as no nation rises above her education system.

“This means that as professional teachers in the making, the future of the nation is in your hands.

You should hold your heads high because you are the cradle of every other noble profession. Today’s matriculation is unique. This is because the degree students among you are the first set of matriculating students in affiliation with the famous University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Secondly, it is the first that I am hosting as Provost.

“It is important to inform you that the College maintains a zero tolerance to cultism and drug abuse. I earnestly encourage you to contribute your quota in sustaining this zero tolerance by disassociating yourself from any involvement in unwholesome activities. This will enable you restrain from all sorts of vices that would be injurious to your career in the College.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Prof Charles Igwe, who was represented by Prof Nelson Obeta encouraged the students to be diligent in their studies bearing in mind that they were an extension of the University of Nigeria.

“For me I think it is a landmark as I have witnessed the University of Nigeria students who are in ESCET. I thank the Provost in a special way for all the effort she is making. We know that we are already in partnership with the institution.

“Our students who are here are going to toe the line of Lions and Lionesses. You are our satellite students. You have to understand that whatever is applicable to students at Nsukka is also applicable to you. You are our mainstream students,” he said.
