The University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association (Cross River State branch) has pledged to boost education in Cross River State by donating books to the state Library Complex.
Dr. Sunny Egor-Oyama, the association’s newly inaugurated president, made the pledge after his election as the Cross River State branch chairman alongside other executives.
He stated that the donated books would help the younger ones particularly those studying courses some of them had studied and also allow students who lack access to reading materials to utilize them.
Egor-Oyama also said the association hopes to expand its membership in the state, work to make UNIPORT among the top five in the country and mentor the younger generation.
“We have to expand our membership, because we have our members in the state to have a broad base in which to take the association forward.
“Lifting UNIPORT as an institution to be among the best five in the country. There are a lot of laudable programmes at the national which we will align with,” he said.
The alumni president, who is also a gynecologist consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), said they would mentor the younger ones on hard work and career choices.
Dr. Francis Ekok, the Branch Secretary highlighted plans for a membership drive to gather alumni in the state, regardless of location.
He also assured that the new executive council would adopt an open-door policy, engaging all members in decision-making processes.
The immediate past branch chairman, Dr. Victor Edim, said the association has been stabilized in the past years and tasked the new executive to take the association to the next level.
