Uni-Uyo don wins NMA Best Lecturer award

Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Uyo, Dr, Bertha Ekeh has won the Best Lecturer of the Year Award of the Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State Chapter.

Dr Ekeh won award as part of activities marking the 2025 Physicians Week of the NMA. The award was presented to her during the grand finale held at Akmag Hotels, Uyo.

Ekeh was recognized for her “ard work, dedication to duty, and ability to simplify complex topics.”

In his remarks, the State Chairman of the NMA, Dr. Aniekan Peter, said awards were introduced to celebrate outstanding members who had demonstrated excellence, leadership, innovation, and service to humanity.

“Physicians Week has always been a cherished tradition, but this year we decided to honour doctors in various categories,” Dr. Peter explained, adding,  “The awards recognize members who have distinguished themselves through commitment and impact.”

Ekeh emerged winner in the medical lecturer category, which honours educators who show exceptional dedication to teaching, mentorship, and academic excellence.

Congratulating her, Professor of Radiology and Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Professor Dianabasi Eduwem, described Ekeh as a beacon of excellence in the university community.

His words: “A good fish has no hiding place. Your commitment to students, the faculty, and the College of Health Sciences is now being openly celebrated.”

Similarly, Past President of the University of Uyo Medical Students Association (UUMSA), Dr. Dianabasi Bassey, praised Ekeh’s passion for teaching and mentorship.

“Dr. Ekeh is a candle that lights others. She teaches tirelessly even on days she has no clinic or ward rounds. Students from other units often sneak into neurology sessions just to learn from her. This award is truly well deserved,” Bassey said.

Reacting to the honour, Dr. Ekeh expressed gratitude to the association and her colleagues, saying, “I am very happy. Listening to my colleagues brings me close to tears. My philosophy is simple. I do not curse the darkness; instead, I light a candle. I do the little within my power and keep doing it right because someday, it will speak.”

The Vice Chairman of the association, Dr. Tiemah Akpabio, outlined some of the week-long events of the Physicians Week, which included a visit to ailing doctors, symposia, young doctors’ competitions, and radio engagements.

The 2025 Physicians Week ran from October 18 to 25, celebrating the commitment of medical professionals across Akwa Ibom State.
