The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has donated a brand new six-seater Toyota Land cruiser to Benue State Emergency Management Agency, (BSEMA)to ease their mobility.
The specialised emergency operational vehicle is been donated following request by the agency for the replacement of its damaged vehicle as a result of accident in June 2023 along Nasarawa Eggon in Nasarawa State.
Making the donation at SEMA headquarters in Makurdi, on Wednesday, January 10, the Head UNHCR Sub Office, Ogoja, Mrs Irene Omondi, said the commission was determined to do more for the refugees and IDPs in Benue.
Omondi who noted that the partnership between the commission and SEMA was strategic, urged the agency to make judicious use of the vehicle.
“The partnership between UNHCR and SEMA is a very important one. It is good that we at UNHCR have committed to and supported refugees and IDPs and working together with the government in ensuring that we can continue with the work.
“I would like to commend the leadership. I had the pleasure of meeting the Governor last year and his commitment on working on finding solutions together with us and other agencies is exactly why we are here today,” she added.
The Acting Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA), while receiving the keys on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia, the agency and the people of Benue State, expressed gratitude over the Commission’s generosity.
Iorpuu who described the handover ceremony as a testament to the power of collaboration and the unwavering support of partners, said the vehicle also signifies more than just a means of transportation.
“It is a lifeline that connects us to those who depend on our swift response in times of crisis.”
“We are receiving a brand new specialized emergency response operational vehicle from the UNHCR following our request for the replacement of the damaged vehicle as a result of the accident during my first official visit with my team to Jos, Plateau State shortly after I assumed office.
“This vehicle is not just a mode of transport; it is a tool for hope, a symbol of solidarity, and a tangible expression of UNHCR’s dedication to enhancing our emergency response capabilities.”
The SEMA boss said with the new asset, the agency is better equipped to reach remote areas to ensure that aid and assistance are delivered promptly to those who need it most.
He announced that UNHCR had recently facilitated the recruitment of dedicated staff to manage not only the Cameroonian refugees at Ikyogen in Kwande LGA of the state but also all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state.
Noting that the expansion of support is instrumental in ensuring that response efforts are comprehensive, leaving no one behind, Iorpuu said their support is a shining example of how partnerships can transform challenges into opportunities, fostering hope, and rebuilding lives.
He called upon all stakeholders, partners, and well-wishers to sustain their support and join hands in creating a more resilient and compassionate Benue State.
He further commended all the reliable partners and stakeholders in their service to humanity including the International Development Partners, the UN as well as the teeming emergency volunteers across Benue State for their sustained efforts urging them to keep up their good as together, “we can ensure that the flame of hope continues to burn bright in the hearts of those we serve.”
