UN governance ratings show Nigeria improving — CSO boss

CSO DG Kunle Yusuf

The Director-General of the Civil Society Organisation for Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative, Kunle Yusuf, has said that Nigeria is making gradual progress in governance, citing the ratings by the United Nations (UN) as evidence that the country is moving in the right direction.

Speaking on Politics Today, Yusuf noted that while the pace of development may not yet be at the desired level, available governance indicators suggest that Nigeria is not stagnating.

According to him, the country has recorded improvements in key indices used by international bodies to assess governance performance, although more effort is needed to achieve faster and more sustainable progress.

“Nigeria is on track. We’ve seen the indices on the right path, but there are indicators and targets that the government will have to do to increase or improve the indicators,” he said.

Yusuf explained that ratings submitted by the United Nations show that Nigeria is advancing, even if the progress is not occurring at a rapid pace.

“As far as the indices submitted by the United Nations to rate the good governance of the country, we are not crawling, but we are not on high speed,” he added.

The civil society leader urged the government to intensify efforts aimed at improving governance outcomes, stressing that better implementation of policies and achievement of development targets would help accelerate the country’s growth and international standing.

He maintained that sustained reforms and stronger institutional performance remain critical to ensuring that Nigeria continues on an upward trajectory.
