Says document provides compelling evidence Russia continues to commit systematic war crimes, crimes against humanity

The Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria has welcomed the new report of the United Nations (UN) Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria, Ivan Kholostenko, in a statement issued in Abuja, said the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria welcomed the publication of the new report of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, presented to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
Kholostenko also said the document provided compelling evidence that the Russian Federation continues to commit systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
The envoy further said the Commission found that regular drone attacks by Russian armed forces on civilian areas in Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions have caused numerous deaths, injuries, and large-scale destruction, forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
“These actions qualify as crimes against humanity in the form of killings and forced displacement of the population.
“The report expresses grave concern over repeated strikes on civilian and humanitarian infrastructure, including aid distribution centres, residential buildings, hospitals, energy facilities, as well as deliberate attacks on ambulances and fire brigades — acts that grossly violate international humanitarian law,” Kholostenko said.

The envoy added that the Commission also documented that the deportation and forced transfer of civilians from the territories occupied by Russia were carried out in a coordinated and systematic manner under centralised command.
He said, “During these operations, Ukrainians were detained, tortured, and deprived of personal documents and belongings — constituting war crimes in the form of inhuman treatment and violations of fundamental human rights.
“The testimonies of victims reveal Russia’s deep contempt for human life and dignity: people suffered severe physical injuries, psychological trauma, and were forcibly separated from their families.
“Ukraine fully supports the Commission’s conclusions and emphasises that impunity must never be tolerated. Every perpetrator must be held accountable.
“Ukraine continues to cooperate closely with international justice institutions, including the International Criminal Court, to document evidence and prosecute those responsible for these crimes. We express our gratitude to all partner states that support our fight for truth and justice and call on the international community to further strengthen pressure on the aggressor, including through sanctions, asset freezes, and political isolation.
“Justice for Ukraine is not only about punishing the perpetrators — it is about restoring faith in international law and ensuring that such crimes never happen again.”
