European football’s governing body, UEFA, has provisionally suspended Gianluca Prestianni ahead of SL Benfica’s Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid CF, following allegations of racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior.
The decision stems from an incident during the first leg in Lisbon on February 17, where Real Madrid secured a 1–0 victory. After Vinícius scored, a heated exchange broke out, with the Brazilian accusing Prestianni of using a racial slur. The referee activated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, leading to a brief suspension of play as officials addressed the situation.
In a statement, UEFA confirmed that its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector had submitted an interim report, prompting the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body to impose a provisional one-match suspension on Prestianni for an alleged breach relating to discriminatory behaviour. The governing body stressed that the measure is temporary, pending the outcome of a full investigation.

Prestianni has denied making a racist remark. Reports indicate he admitted using an offensive term but insisted it was not racially motivated. Benfica have publicly backed the young midfielder and are understood to be preparing a defence as the disciplinary process continues.
The case has once again cast a harsh light on racism in European football, particularly given Vinícius’ history of facing abuse in Spain. On social media after the match, the forward declared that “racists are, above all, cowards,” a comment that quickly gained traction among fans and anti-discrimination advocates.
For Benfica, the suspension is a significant setback ahead of the decisive return leg. For UEFA, the outcome of the investigation will be closely watched, not only for its sporting implications but for what it signals about football’s resolve in confronting racism at the highest level.
