The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Nigeria are strengthening their relationship through increased trade, economic cooperation, and diplomatic efforts. This partnership has grown significantly since the UAE Consulate General opened in Lagos in 2019, with collaborations now spanning commerce, infrastructure, culture, and security.

Nigeria has become a key entry point for UAE investments in West Africa, while the UAE stands as one of Nigeria’s most important trading partners in the Gulf. Data from 2022 shows that non-oil trade between the two nations was approximately $2.4 billion, with Nigeria’s exports including gold, spices, and charcoal. In 2023, the UAE exported over $1.61 billion in goods to Nigeria, led by refined petroleum, broadcasting equipment, and automobiles.

The UAE is also one of Nigeria’s leading sources of foreign direct investment, with financial flows between the two countries on the rise. This growth is supported by regular trade delegations and high-level meetings between business and government leaders. A dedicated Joint Committee has been established to guide this cooperation across political, trade, cultural, and security interests, ensuring that agreements are implemented and partnerships are fostered.

In a move to further boost economic engagement, the Dubai International Chamber has opened a new representative office in Lagos. The opening ceremony, attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighted the importance of UAE-Nigeria business relations and created a central hub for Emirati companies looking to expand into West Africa.

A representative from the UAE Consulate General in Lagos emphasized that the relationship is built on trust, shared vision, and mutual prosperity. The consulate is focused on initiatives that not only promote trade but also contribute to sustainable development and regional collaboration.

Looking ahead, the growing momentum between the UAE and Nigeria signals a long-term partnership that extends beyond economics. The countries are poised to collaborate in areas like innovation, education, and technology, strengthening ties and promoting cross-regional integration between the Gulf and West Africa. This continued cooperation sets the stage for new heights in their relationship.
