Trump takes swipe at Pope Leo over anti-war message

US President Donald Trump has criticised the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, following renewed tensions over the Pope’s public call for peace and restraint in global conflicts linked to Iran.

Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where he questioned the Pope’s position on crime and international security.

“I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo. He’s a very liberal person, and he’s a man that doesn’t believe in stopping crime,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The Pope had earlier delivered a strong peace message during a public address at St Peter’s Basilica, urging world leaders to reject war and political excess.

“Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war!”

Trump also accused the pontiff of interfering in sensitive geopolitical matters involving Iran’s nuclear programme.

He accused the pontiff of “toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon.”

The US president later reinforced his position on Truth Social, insisting that Iran must not be allowed access to nuclear weapons under any circumstance.

“I don’t want a Pope who think it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.”

The Vatican has denied reports suggesting a widening rift with Washington, saying claims of internal disagreement were inaccurate.

“The account presented by certain media outlets regarding this meeting does not correspond to the truth in any way.”

The disagreement adds to ongoing friction between the Vatican and the White House over war, migration policy, and US-Iran diplomatic negotiations, which remain unresolved.
