United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were unharmed after gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.

The shooting occurred near the main security screening area at the Washington Hilton, the venue hosting the annual gathering of journalists, politicians and public figures.

“The president and first lady are safe along with all protectees,” the United States Secret Service said after confirming that a suspect had been taken into custody.

Witnesses said the sound of gunshots sent guests scrambling for cover, as Secret Service agents moved swiftly to secure the ballroom and evacuate senior officials, including Vice President J. D.

Vance and members of the cabinet.
Trump later commended the response of security agencies, describing their actions as swift and courageous.

“Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended,” he said.

Organisers said the incident forced an abrupt halt to the evening’s programme. Authorities are continuing investigations and have yet to release further details about the suspect or any possible casualties.
